Spray an all purpose cleaner on the surface of the counter and wipe away with a dampened washcloth. Repeat this regularly to keep the counter surface clean (see link in References).

Use an abrasive cleaner only if you have a matte finish on the counter. Apply the cleaner to the entire counter surface. Scrub the cleaner away with large, circular motions to prevent an uneven look on the counter (see link in References).

Apply undiluted bleach to stains on the counter surface. Wipe the excess away within five minutes to prevent whitening the counter top. Follow the bleach cleaning with an overall application of all purpose cleaner and water (see link in References).

Scrub nicotine stains or scorch marks off the surface by applying an abrasive cleaner. Scrub with a circular motion to remove. Act quickly on scorch marks and nicotine stains, because these can cause permanent stains even with immediate treatment, depending on the severity (see link in References).
