Acne blemishes cause minor damage that leaves scarring that appears as redness and inflammation. This scarring causes the skin to look covered in acne blemishes even after the pustules and cysts have cleared. Redness caused by acne scarring can be reduced by controlling the inflammation on the skin and removing dead skin from the face. A few household remedies will buff and lighten acne scarring effectively.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Raw, stone-ground oatmeal
  • Cucumber slices
  • Chamomile oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Honey
  • Baking soda
  1. Step 1

Cleanse the skin with raw, stone-ground oats. Oats are mildly abrasive and contain vitamin E, which hydrates the skin. Oat are also anti-inflammatory, and will soothe the skin and reduce redness and swelling. Wet the skin with warm water. Pour 1/2 cup of raw oats into your hand, and wet it slightly under the water. Massage the wet oats onto the skin for one to two minutes, using circular movements. Rinse the skin completely afterward. Use oats to cleanse the skin once per day.

  2. Step 2

Apply chamomile oil. Chamomile oil is extremely anti-inflammatory and reduces redness dramatically when applied to the skin. Combine three drops of chamomile oil with five drops of jojoba oil to dilute it, then massage the oil onto the acne scarring for two minutes. Let the chamomile oil remain on the skin for an additional two minutes, then wipe away any remaining oil with a soft washcloth. Use chamomile oil on the skin up to three times per week.

  3. Step 3

Use an alkaline honey scrub. Both honey and baking soda are powerful redness reducers, and when combined will effectively remove dead skin from the face. When this dead skin is removed regularly, it helps eliminate skin discolorations that could be causing the acne scarring to look more red. Mix 1/4 cup of raw honey with 2 tbsp. of baking soda, and stir until they are combined. Spread the mixture onto wet skin, and use the fingertips to massage it in. After two to three minutes, rinse the skin thoroughly with warm water. Use a honey baking soda scrub once per week.

  4. Step 4

Apply a cucumber mask. Cucumbers naturally reduce inflammation on skin, which decreases the amount of redness in acne scars. Cucumbers also calm the skin and reduce fluid retention in the face. Slice a cucumber into thin slices, and drape the slices onto the skin, covering the areas of acne scarring. Let the cucumber slices remain on the skin for five to seven minutes, then rinse the skin with water. Cucumbers can be used on the skin once a day.
