How to Work on a New Zealand Cruise Ship
People who want to work on cruise ships in New Zealand have a number of options. Regular cruises departing from one of New Zealand's many ports visit some of the smaller surrounding islands over two- or three-night periods. Large international cruise ships also circumnavigate the islands of New Zealand as part of other itineraries that include visits to Australia or the islands of the South Pacific. These cruises can last up to 70 days on Holland America.

Look at the careers or employment section of the official websites for cruise ship companies to see what positions are available. Check at the bottom of the homepages for links to these sections. If you are a U.S. passport holder, you will need to apply to American-based companies who run cruises around New Zealand. See the Resources section for some of these links.

Carefully read the requirements for each vacant position. Ensure that you fulfill the legal requirements and have the appropriate work experience for the position for which you are applying. For example, applicants for customer service positions should have a background in customer service.

Apply for as many positions as possible to increase your chances of being hired. If you wish to apply directly to companies such as Island Escape, which is based in New Zealand, you will need to apply for a New Zealand work permit.

Once you are hired, you might be able to request that you are put on a cruise to New Zealand. Although you might not initially be granted your wish, as you gain seniority in the company, you are more likely to be placed on a New Zealand cruise.
