How to Kill Wild Violets

Wild violets are attractive perennials that resemble planted violets. They have heart-shaped, green leaves and either white or purple flowers, according to Barbara Fahs of the Garden Guides website. Wild violets prefer shady areas, but they can make themselves at home in sunny areas as well. These plants are pretty, especially in wild settings. But they tend to plant themselves in yards and in flower gardens where they aren't wanted, also. It's not hard to kill wild violets, but you'll need to be vigilant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use a garden trowel to remove any mulch that may be present so you can get underneath the wild violets. Remove any weed barriers as well.

    • 2

Dig up the entire plants, roots and all, using a garden trowel. Wild violets have underground stems; they must also be removed.

    • 3

Check the area to see if any wild violets have sprouted up in a week or two. Spot treat the area with an herbicide if necessary. Follow the directions on the container to achieve the best results. Spray the wild violets directly. Use care not to get the herbicide on other plants.

    • 4

Recheck the area in another week or two. If more wild violets have appeared, apply another herbicide treatment to kill them.
