Halloween is one of the most exciting and anticipated holidays for kids. 94% of all kids between ages 4-12 will participate this year. You don't want to dampen the festivities, but there are things that parents can do, to make it a safer night of fun.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • wish to make halloween safe
  1. Step 1

Choose either bright and flame retardant costumes or ADD reflective tape to assure your child is seen easily in the dark. Each child should have a small flashlight.

  2. Step 2

Map out a SAFE trick-or-treating route for your older kids, and make sure it's composed of familiar, well-lit streets. Insist that older kids travel in groups. Talk to your kids about pedestrian safety. Make older kids aware that if anyone offers them to go elsewhere, scream NO! And continue screaming, if someone physically grabs them.

  3. Step 3

Little kids should NEVER go out alone. A parent or trusted adult should accompany the child to each door.

  4. Step 4

Remind kids to be alert to suspicious incidents and report them to thee parents, who may feel law enforcement should be notified.

  5. Step 5

Finally, the hardest tip--convince your child not to sample any goodies until the bag contents are inspected by a parent.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make your child alert, but not frightened by the dark and costumed people met on Halloween night.
  • Halloween is an important time for parents and kids to be especially alert to their surroundings, and remind them of the rules --just prior to their leaving--including a time that they must return--(no watch, or can't tell time, ask at a house along their trick-or-treat route)

on 10/17/2009 You definitely want your kids to glow in the dark while they are trick or treating. Halloween is a night tons of little kids are out on the street and tons of teenagers are out drinking and driving - make sure your kids are VERY visible. Great article. 5* and rec.
