How To Install a Windlass

Most sailboats, yachts and other types of boats have a device called a windlass that assists in the hoisting of the anchor. It is a type of winch that lifts the anchor mechanically. Smaller sailboats typically come equipped with a manual windlass. The most important first step in installing it is to find one that fits your boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where to mount the windlass. The general location should be in the center of the foredeck.

    • 2

Make sure the unit is aligned with an anchor roller or mount, if one is used, to store the anchor when it is not in use. A roller is needed so that the anchor can pass smoothly over the rail or side of the boat. Some boats may also store the anchor in a locker or compartment on the deck.

    • 3

Windlasses are available as a horizontal unit that mounts on top of the deck or a vertical unit that mounts below the deck. The horizontal windlass is most common on small boats.

    • 4

Make a diagram or template for the holes that are needed to secure the hawse pipe (a metal tube that the anchor chain or rope passes through from the anchor compartment) and windlass to the deck. Use the tape measure to get the dimensions that are needed.

    • 5

Cut a hole for the hawse pipe using a reciprocating saw. You will then need to drill holes for the bolts with a cordless drill. The bolts will be used to secure the windlass and hawse pipe to the deck.

    • 6

Insert the hawse pipe in the deck and then fit the windlass so it sits directly over the hawse pipe.

    • 7

Place bolts into the bolt holes and hand tighten nuts on each bolt. Use a wrench to fully tighten the nuts, securing the hawse pipe and windlass to the deck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a larger windlass if you think the one you are considering may be too small. Installing a windlass can prevent back strain and injury.

  • Your boat's anchor compartment may not be big enough for a vertical windlass. You will need to connect an electric windlass to your boat's battery.
