Step 1
Choose a location for your Frosty Fern plant with suitable lighting. The ideal location is predominantly shady. The plants will tolerate some late-afternoon or early-morning sun exposure.
-
Step 2
Select an area or container that has organically rich soil. Mix leaves, ground egg shells, coffee grinds and grass clippings to make organic compost. Spread the compost on the ground at the base of the Frosty Fern plants when you plant. Repeat compost application at the beginning of the spring season.
-
Step 3
Water the Frosty Fern plant several times a week. This plant enjoys soil that is very moist but not soggy. Stick a finger halfway into the soil to test the soil, and if it is not moist, water the base of the plant. Reduce the amount of water during the colder months for the plant to enjoy a resting state, but don't let the soil become parched.
-
Step 4
Fertilize the Frosty Fern plant weekly during the spring and bi-weekly during the summer. Use a liquid organic fertilizer that is specifically made for ferns, available at a gardening store or home improvement store.
-
Step 5
Measure the temperature in the area where the Frosty Fern is located. The ideal temperature for this plant is 73 to 83 Fahrenheit. Cover ferns with a paper bag if temperatures drop to freezing to protect them from frost damage.
-
Step 6
Examine Frosty Fern leaves for fungus if night temperatures are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut back on fertilization and water for Frosty Ferns with leaf fungus. Use only fungicides specified for ferns.
