How to Install Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Introduced in 2001, Microsoft's Windows XP operating system is the successor to the Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional operating systems. XP offers a number of improvements over its predecessors, including enhanced stability and a fresh redesign of the user interface. XP also has an integrated Picture and Fax Viewer that opens most common picture formats such as jpeg, gif and bitmap. Like many other parts of an operating system, however, the viewer is not immune to problems. If you are experiencing any issues with the viewer or if it stops working, you can reinstall it fairly easily.

  • Click on the Windows "Start" button on the lower left hand side of your computer screen. A Start menu pops up. Click the "Run" option to open a dialog box that allows you to enter the commands to stop and reinstall the Picture and Fax Viewer.

  • Type the following command into the Run dialog box (without the quotation marks) "regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll". Then click "OK," and a new dialog box opens with the following message: "DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll succeeded." The Picture and Fax Viewer has now been disabled and is ready to be restarted. Click "OK."

  • Reopen the Run dialog box and enter the following: "regsvr32 /i %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll". Click "OK" as before, and a dialog box with the following message opens: "DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll succeeded." Again, click "OK."

  • Reboot your computer and test the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer by double-clicking on the image file of your choice.
