Things You'll Need:
- Silk item
- Iron
- Ironing board
- Two large pieces of white cloth
-
Step 1
Use the appropriate iron setting to press silk. Set the iron to its lowest setting or the silk setting. Some irons have a silk setting, while others do not. You can use a steam iron at a low setting, but be sure that water does not shoot out from the small holes since water spots or rings may form on the silk item.
-
Step 2
Position one of the cloth pieces on the ironing board. To prevent bleeding problems associated with some colored cloths, only utilize a white cloth for ironing silk.
-
Step 3
Place the silk item inside out on top of the white cloth. Make certain that the item is completely flat to avoid crease marks as you iron. Cover the item with the second piece of cloth to prevent accidental scorch marks. The cloth piece should be large enough so that it covers the item completely. Use this white cloth as a pressing cloth.
-
Step 4
Press the iron lightly over one section of the white cloth. Move the iron quickly over the cloth to avoid scorch burns and continue to the next section. It is best to work in sections.
-
Step 5
Remove the top white cloth to inspect the item for wrinkles or creases. If these are still present, replace the cloth over the item and iron it again until it is completely free of wrinkles.
-
Step 6
Let the item cool before hanging it up on padded hangars. To do touch-ups on these items, use the same technique outlined in this tutorial.
