How to Collect Horse Sperm

Methods of gathering horse sperm vary. One method uses a dummy mare with an artificial vagina to "trick" a male horse and collect the sperm.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 stallion
  • 1 mare (in heat)
  • 1 phantom/dummy mare
  • 1 artificial vagina (with receptacle at end)
  • 1 individual, the "handler"
  • 1 individual, the "collector"

Instructions

  1. Collecting Horse Sperm

    • 1

Position mare in front of the phantom, or dummy mare, to encourage the stallion (known as "teasing").

    • 2

Once an erection is attained, bring stallion to the phantom to mount.

    • 3

Position handler on the left shoulder of stallion and collector near the horse's right hip.

    • 4

The handler checks the horse's progress, while the collector deflects the penis into the artificial vagina (AV).

    • 5

The collector rotates to keep pressure against the horse's flank, allowing the stallion to thrust into the AV, which is resting against the phantom.

    • 6

Once the horse begins to ejaculate, the back end of the AV is lowered, assuring the semen will run into the bottle and not on the floor.

    • 7

When the penis begins to soften, the collector needs to keep the AV in place and drive the horse away from the phantom, keeping contact with the flank of the horse and the abdomen. The handler should prevent the horse from twisting.

    • 8

Rinse the horse's genitals and return him to his stall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Greenacres Stud, breeders and importers from South Derbyshire England, mention "different horses respond to different stimuli, and no one system works for every horse at every stud, so expect a little trial and error to find the right response. Since horses never read any of the "books" that purport to explain horse behavior, one must be prepared to adapt."

  • Greenacres Stud warns handlers to avoid the forefeet of the horse as he mounts, but still maintain contact with the horse's shoulder to steady and stabilize him. Helmets also are suggested to lower the risk of injury for the handler and collector.
