How to Play PS3 Games Online
Many Sony PlayStation 3 games feature the online multiplayer game option. This allows people to play against players from around the world. PS3 owners must create a PlayStation Network account before games can be played online. PSN accounts are free, with no registration or monthly fees. Once the player has created and signed into a PSN account, the online multiplayer function can be accessed directly from the game itself.

Go to the PS3 main menu. This can be accessed by turning on the PS3 without a disc in the drive or by pressing the PS button on the controller.

Select the option to register a PlayStation Network account.

Enter a user name and e-mail address as prompted to register your PSN account.

Insert the game disc.

Select the "Play Game" option from the PS3 main menu. It is shaped like a CD.

Select the option from the game's main menu to start online gameplay. This will usually be referred to as either multiplayer or online play depending on the game.

Choose your PlayStation Network account if prompted by the game. This will usually not be necessary unless you manually sign out of your PSN account from the PS3 main menu.

Tips & Warnings
Some PS3 games, such as Final Fantasy XIV, require paying an additional monthly fee to play the game. You will typically need to arrange the payment method before you start playing the game.

to have a friend join the online game ie. on call of duty modern warfare. can it be played like split screen through the one playstation or do you need a second ps3 to have this happen??
