How to Download Java for Dummies

Java is a free program created by Sun Microsystems that enhances the graphics quality of various devices that have digital displays. The use of Java can be seen all over the Internet, in video games, cellular phones, PDAs and Blu-ray discs. Downloading Java is a simple task, and you can install it in a few minutes with minimal interaction with the download wizard. Once it's installed, you'll see a difference in the appearance of many websites you visit.

Instructions

1. Open your Web browser and navigate to the Free Java Download page (follow the link in the Resources section).

2. Click on the blue "Free Java Download" button, and a download dialog box will appear.

3. Click on "Run" and allow Java to download to your computer. Once the download is complete, an installation wizard will appear.

4. Click on "Install" to start the installation wizard and accept the license agreement. You must accept the license agreement, or you won't be able to install Java on your computer.

5. Choose to accept or refuse any third-party software that is offered to you with Java. After you make your choice(s), allow the installer to finish, and click on "Close" to complete the download and installation procedure.

6. Restart your browser to allow Java to take effect.

Tips & Warnings

• If you want to download Java, but you're not ready to install it, click on "Save" when the download dialog box appears, and then choose the directory on your computer in which you want to save the program. You can open the directory later and follow the instructions above to install Java on your computer. If you're a Mac user, you will never have to install Java because Mac installs its own version of the program on the computers it manufactures. You can update Java using the "Software Update" application on the "Apple" menu.
