How to Install a Muffler on a Pontiac

Installing a muffler on a Pontiac is relatively straightforward. The Pontiac uses rubber hooks attached to a metal bracket that is, in turn, secured to the underside of the vehicle. Mufflers may corrode or rust if you live in an area that has a high moisture content in the air or in an area where salt is used to de-ice the roads in the winter. Once you've removed the old muffler, here's how to install the new one.

• Socket wrench
• Socket set
• Exhaust gasket

1. Align the mounting holes on the muffler with the mounting flange on the end of the exhaust piping.

2. Place an exhaust gasket between the Pontiac's muffler and the exhaust piping.

3. Thread the bolts through the muffler bracket, and tighten them to secure the Pontiac's muffler to the exhaust piping.

4. Slide the metal hook on the top of the Pontiac's muffler through the rubber loop hook on the underside of the body. The mufflers for Pontiac vehicles "float" on this hook while they are attached to the exhaust piping. This ensures even airflow while not being bolted to any part of the vehicle (to prevent heat from transferring to the body or other heat sensitive components, such as body panels).
