It's a shame to throw all those plastic grocery bags in the trash after you get home and unload your groceries. It's best to use the rule of recycle, reuse and repurpose. You can use those grocery bags to make a tote bag or rug by crocheting them together. With a few tips you will be on your way to creating useful items from plastic bags that you would have thrown out yesterday.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic grocery bags
  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Place a plastic grocery bag flat on your work area. Cut off the bottom, where the bag is closed. Also, cut off any handles on your bag's top. Now you have a plastic tube.

  2. Step 2

Open the bag. Start at the top, on one layer, cutting in at an angle to about 2 inches. Re-angle your scissors to cut straight across, at 2 inches. Cut around and around the plastic grocery bag, to get one long strip, like an apple peeling.

  3. Step 3

Cut all your plastic grocery bags in the same manner, making long strips.

  4. Step 4

Tie the long plastic strips together with square knots (see Resources).

  5. Step 5

Wind the plastic strips into a ball, as you would a ball of yarn. Crochet just as you would with yarn.

Tips & Warnings
  • You might think you would need a large crochet hook, but a size G or H is sufficient. You can double the plastic grocery bags for a thicker project, as you would use two yarns at the same time. Use a larger hook for these projects, size I or J.
