How to Play Windows XP Games on Vista Laptop

The many benefits of upgrading to a Windows Vista-based laptop can be diminished when some of your favorite games won't run on the newer operating system. But using Vista's compatibility wizard allows your old XP-compatible games to run on your new laptop. The Vista compatibility wizard allows you to tweak Vista's display and service pack settings to accommodate your Windows XP games.

      Install the Windows XP game you wish to play on your Vista laptop. When going through the game's installation wizard, select the option to make the program available for all users.

      Click on the "Start" button and then enter the following chain into the search box: "%systemroot%\System32\mshta.exe res://acprgwiz.dll/compatmode.hta." Hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard to launch the Vista's compatibility wizard.

      Click "Next" in the first window of the compatibility wizard. Select the first option, labeled "I want to choose from a list of programs," and click "Next" to continue.

      Scroll through the list of installed program on your computer. Locate your XP-compatible game, select it and then click "Next."

      Select the last option on the next page, labeled "Disable display scaling on high DPI setting." Click "Next" to continue. The compatibily wizard will launch a test of your XP game. If you encounter display issues when you run the game, the wizard will relaunch. Select the option labeled "Run in 640---480 screen resolution."

      Select a response to the question "Did the program work correctly" on the next page. If you are satisfied with the test launch of your XP game, select the first option. Select the second option, labeled "No, try different compatibility settings," for different settings. Select the last option, labeled "No, I am finishing trying compatibly settings," to discard the compatibility settings and exit the wizard.
