An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a set of numbers, much like a phone number, that is designated for each device connected to the Internet. The number is actually a set of four numbers separated by periods like this: 27.186.24.101. Each service provider is assigned a set of IP addresses. As a result, the number can be used to identify the general location of its device.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open a browser on your computer. In the URL field, type "www.google.com" and hit "Enter." The page that results will have a search field. Type "find IP address" in the search field and hit the "Google Search" button.

  2. Step 2

Scroll down the next page until you find a site that is intended to find and generate IP addresses. Click on the link to the site and wait for the page to load.

  3. Step 3

Find the IP address field on the site you picked. Typically these sites have a field prominently displayed.

  4. Step 4

Type the IP address into the field. Hit the "Submit" or "Enter" button. Let the next page load.

  5. Step 5

Note the information displayed such as the country, region, state, latitude and longitude, service provider and, on occasion, the connection speed and area code.

Tips & Warnings
  • Find your own IP address by performing an Internet search for "My IP address." There are several websites that, when visited, will automatically generate your IP address.
