How to Plug a PVC Pipe
PVC's low cost and ease of use make it a great plumbing material for the do-it-yourself homeowner. Anyone can attach the necessary fittings, no matter how limited your skills or experience. Putting a plug on a PVC pipe is no exception; by following a few recommended best practices, you will have a long-lasting plug. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Female-to-female threaded PVC fitting
- PVC primer
- PVC cement
- Male threaded PVC plug
- Teflon tape
- Plumber's pipe dope
- Wrench
Instructions
-
-
1
Thoroughly clean the end of the PVC pipe you wish to plug.
-
2
Swab a layer of purple PVC primer onto the outside surface of the end of the pipe and the inside surface of the female-to-female threaded fitting.
-
-
3
Swab a layer of PVC cement onto both surfaces, and slide the female end of the fitting (not the threaded end) onto the PVC pipe.
-
4
Make three wraps around the threads of the PVC plug with some Teflon tape. Wrap in a clockwise direction as you look at the threaded end of the plug so the tape will not come off when you screw the plug onto the fitting.
-
5
Apply a thin layer of pipe dope to both sets of threads---the female threads on the fitting, and the male threads on the plug. Screw the plug into the fitting, giving it an additional 1/2 turn with a wrench after "finger tight." Do not overtighten, as you can crack the plastic.
