How to Blush Reborn Dolls

Reborn dolls, which are a type of vinyl baby doll altered to look as close to a real baby as possible, have become popular among doll hobbyists and artists alike. Typically, an artist will choose a vinyl doll body that he likes and make modifications, such as adding realistic hair, poseable limbs or bodies and makeup that emphasizes the eyes and skin. One way to modify the skin of a reborn doll is called blushing, that is, adding red and pink tones to give the appearance of life.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old blush color and any other makeup from the doll's head and body, using a non-acetone nail-polish remover. Dip a cotton ball in the remover and rub it gently over the surface of the doll, taking up as much of the damaged makeup as possible. Wipe the reborn doll with a clean towel afterward.

    • 2

Choose the blushing colors for your doll. Pick a dark red, a true red, a pink, a blue and a mauve, along with any other colors that you would like to add to the doll's skin tones. You may choose to go darker or lighter with your color choices, depending on the look you want for your doll.

    • 3

Put on latex gloves if you are working with oil paints instead of lip-liner pencils. Apply the first color---which should be a base color, such as dark red or blue, used for the veins---to the pads of your fingers.

    • 4

Rub the color onto the doll at the temples and anywhere else you would like these undertones to show. Add a little mineral oil to a makeup sponge and gently blend the color you have applied. If you do not like what you did, wipe the color away completely with the mineral oil.

    • 5

Add the medium tones, highlights and shadows to the doll in the same manner, putting color at the back of the hands and feet, the ears, the cheeks, the wrinkles and the skin folds. Blend the colors with mineral oil.

    • 6

Let the blush dry for a few days, then reassess your work and make changes. The colors will soak into the vinyl of your reborn doll and brighten after time, so you may need to take away or add some color.
