How to Prepare for the UK Citizenship Test

Applying for United Kingdom citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain can be a nerve-wracking experience. One part of the process is the Life in the UK citizenship test. Presented in a computerized format, you will have 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple-choice questions on subjects ranging from religion and customs to transport and the workplace. The citizenship test is extremely detailed and as such necessitates much preparation on your part.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the testing procedure, as well as the overall layout and content of the test, by visiting the Navigation Tutorial at the official Life in the UK website (see Resources).

    • 2

Purchase a copy of "Life in the UK: A Journey to Citizenship." This handbook forms the basis of the test itself and contains everything you will need to know. Practice questions and a study guide are also available.

    • 3

Take a citizenship course at your local college. An ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)/citizenship course is a requirement if your English is below an ESOL Entry Level 3. Contact the Life in the UK Helpline at 0800 0154245 for more information about courses.

    • 4

Try the Official Citizenship Practice Test at www.ukcitizenshiptest.co.uk. The practice test replicates the test-taking experience by presenting similar questions under the same time constraints and scoring system. You may also go over your answers after you have completed the practice test to find those areas in need of improvement.

    • 5

Go through the "What You Need to Know" section of the Life in the UK website. This reviews all of the topics that may potentially be covered on the test. Make a note of any subjects you feel uncomfortable with for deeper study later.
