Playing pool is incredibly fun and challenging. There are numerous aspects of the game which must be learned in order to be consistently successful. Pool requires skills in aim, dexterity, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Handling of and gripping the pool cue correctly is the most important aspect of the game.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool cue
  • Pool table
  • Cue ball
  1. Step 1

Find a spot half way up the fat end (bottom) of the cue. Grasp this spot with the four fingers of your right hand and lay your thumb across your index finger. Hold the cue up in the air horizontally. Move your hand slightly down the cue if it feels like the bottom is significantly heavier than the top, or move your hand slightly up the cue if the top feels significantly heavier.

  2. Step 2

Place your left hand on the pool table with the heel of the hand making contact and the fingers tilting up and pointing away from you. Take the cue (still gripped in your right hand) and rest it in the "V" between the thumb and index finger of your left hand. Your left hand should meet the cue approximately 4 inches from the tip.

  3. Step 3

Bend your knees slightly and bring your torso down toward the table so you can look straight ahead and see where the tip of the cue is pointing. Bringing your torso closer to the cue and the table gives you more control over the movement of the cue.

  4. Step 4

Slide the cue forward and backward with your right hand. Use your right hand to steer the cue left, right, up, and down. Plant your left hand on the table and keep it still to ensure cue stability. Practice sliding the cue back and forth until you know what movement you need to make with your back hand to make the cue move as you wish.

  5. Step 5

Place the cue ball (white ball) approximately 5 inches in front of your left hand and line up the tip of your cue with the center of the ball. Slide the cue back and forth a few times, and when you're ready, gently connect with the ball to make it head to the other side of the table.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are left handed, replace "right" with "left" and "left" with "right" in the directions. You need to have your strong hand at the bottom of the cue. Try aiming the cue ball at pockets before aiming it at balls.
  • Do not hit the cue ball with extreme force. Pool balls can easily fly off the table when struck violently.
