How to Get the Best Gas Mileage Out of a CRV

Save

The Honda CR-V is an SUV crossover vehicle that mixes the size of a larger SUV with the gas mileage of a car. Because the vehicle has a smaller 40 cylinder engine, it does not use up as much gas, giving it a higher MPG than most other SUVs in the same class. Of course, if you are looking to obtain the best gas mileage out of your Honda CR-V, there are a few tricks and techniques you need to follow.

Things You'll Need

  • Honda CR-V
  • Drive on the highway when possible. Because there is (typically) less braking and stopping, you do not use as much gas by constantly accelerating your car.

  • Roll up your windows. If your windows are down, this creates drag and forces your Honda CR-V to use up more gas to maintain speed.

  • Turn off your air conditioner. The air conditioner uses gas to power and cool the inside of the car. You can use the heater, though, because that is taken off of the engine duct and does not require excess gasoline.

  • Stay at a constant speed and coast down hills. Accelerating increases your fuel usage and decreases your MPG.

  • Follow other vehicles. If you coast behind other cars (or especially semi trucks) it reduces the drag on your Honda CR-V. You do not need to stay directly behind the truck. In fact, staying a few hundred feet behind a truck or car provides an adequate draft while still providing you with enough time to stop your car in case the vehicle brakes suddenly.

  • Keep your tires properly inflated. Flat tires run down your MPG.

  • Carry only what you need in the car. Just because the Honda CR-V is designed to carry heavier payloads then the standard car, does not mean you need to. Take out the golf bags or other equipment from your trunk and the gas mileage goes up.
