A ceramic tile fireplace can be given an upgrade through the use of marble tiles. While marble tiles will adhere to ceramic when the correct mortar is used, it is important to make sure that the ceramic tiles are in good condition and firmly glued to the surround and hearth of the fireplace. A loose ceramic tile will eventually come off of the fireplace along with the marble tile or tiles on top of it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tile adhesive
  • Marble sealer
  • Rag
  • Latex-reinforced thinset mortar
  • 1/16-inch spacers
  • Notched trowel
  • Wet saw
  • Screwdriver
  • Grout
  • Rubber float
  • Sponge
  1. Step 1

Clean the fireplace thoroughly and glue down any loose ceramic tiles with tile adhesive.

  2. Step 2

Apply marble sealer to the top of each marble tile, with a rag.

  3. Step 3

Spread latex-reinforced thinset mortar over the ceramic tiles on the surround of the fireplace, with a notched trowel.

  4. Step 4

Press the marble tiles firmly into the mortar and use 1/16-inch spacers between tiles. Continue until you have covered the surround of the fireplace.

  5. Step 5

Use the notched trowel to spread the latex-reinforced thinset mortar over the hearth of the fireplace.

  6. Step 6

Lay the marble tiles into the mortar and continue to use 1/16-inch spacers between tiles to maintain consistent grout lines.

  7. Step 7

Cut the marble with a wet saw to create edge tiles for the front and sides of the hearth. These tiles should be tall enough to cover the existing hearth, the ceramic tile and the exposed edges of the marble tile.

  8. Step 8

Apply thinset mortar to the edges of the hearth and press the edge tiles into place. Allow the mortar to set up overnight.

  9. Step 9

Remove all of the tile spacers with a thin screwdriver.

  10. Step 10

Mix grout according to the directions on the package. Spread the grout over the tile using a rubber float to fill all of the grout lines. Use a damp sponge to wipe excess grout away from the faces of the tiles as you work.
