How to Find Shed Antlers
Hunting for antler sheds is a fun an rewarding activity that can be done alone or with the whole family. Typically deer shed their antlers in late December through January, depending on the region where you live. Cold weather clothing, a patient disposition, and some knowledge of local woodlands is necessary. An antler is an exciting trophy that can be displayed in the home. Hunting for sheds is also a good way for hunters to scout for deer; if a shed is found, it might be a good place to return during hunting season.

Choose a place you wish to hunt for antler sheds. Have a detailed map topographical map of the area you wish to explore. Examine the map to avoid climbing steep hills. Look at low lands or valleys or gentle rolling terrain.

3
Explore the woods for signs of deer. In the north, deer will "yard" for the winter, staying in one area where there is a good food source and conifers to protect from heavy, deep snow. Look for browse lines on the trunks of trees: deer will eat the bark from hemlocks and other conifers. Look also for browse marks on apple, witch hazel, fir, elderberry, striped maple, mountain ash, and willow trees.

4
Scan the ground for antler points. Antlers are white, and snow cover will make searching more difficult. Look for a few inches of white protruding from the ground or snow. Walk the area slowly. Take care not to lose your way in the woods.

5
Look in areas of heavy brush and cover. Deer often use these areas for shelter in the cold winter months. Deer drop antlers in late December and through January, these are the best times to look. You can often find sheds through March or April, depending upon your location.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a creative side, antlers make unique and rustic lamps or wall mountings, and sell commercially for a high price.
Areas with heavy rodent populations will decrease your chances of finding a shed antler in late winter or spring. Rodents can chew antlers until they are gone. Be careful not to lose your way in the woods. Bring a cell phone in case you need to call for help. Always let someone know where you are going. Consult with the landowner for permission to hunt for sheds and never trespass on private property. Heavy snows will hide shed antlers, and make walking difficult.
