Select a paint and primer designed for metal.

Do your spray painting outdoors on a calm day with temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. You should also attempt to paint when the humidity is less than 85 percent, if possible.

Clean the metal surface well and allow it to dry completely. Use a primer that is recommended by the manufacturer of the spray paint you have selected so that you get proper adhesion of the paint. Apply a coat of the primer and allow it to dry.

Hold the spray can about 12 inches away from the metal object and begin spraying using a sweeping, side to side motion. Do not stop or pause in one spot to prevent the paint from building up and running. You should apply multiple light coats of paint in order to get the best results. Allow each coat to dry about 10 minutes before proceeding to the next coat.

Tips & Warnings
You can end the frustration of clogged spray paint cans by clearing the nozzle out after each use. Hold the can upside down and hold down the nozzle until paint no longer comes out.
