How to Latch Hook Fabric

Latch-hooking projects offer a fairly simplistic way to individualize your home's decorations. One-of-a-kind rugs and wall hangings can be fine-tuned to match your decor or add a spot of color to an otherwise dull room. Substituting fabric for yarn in your projects is another way to customize your decorations.

Instructions

  1. Latch-Hooking Fabric

    • 1

Select your latch-hook canvas and your fabric in the colors of your choice. Estimate how much fabric you will need by measuring your canvas and buying enough of each color to wrap the canvas as if it were a present.

    • 2

Spread newspaper or other protective covering over a table to protect the surface as you draw your design. After spreading your canvas flat, use a permanent marker to draw your design.Use different colored markers to annotate the various colors, or simply write the color names on the canvas areas.

    • 3

Cut your fabric into strips measuring 1/2 an inch wide. Next, cut each of the strips into 3-inch pieces. Keep your different colors separated so you can find your pieces faster.

    • 4

Begin latch-hooking your canvas according to the pattern you drew. Fold your material strips in half to form a loop, and pull through the loop through the canvas with your tool.

    • 5

Fill in the entire canvas by using your selected material strips to complete your design.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy more material in all colors than you estimate that you will need. Too much material is better than not enough and will save you extra trips to the fabric or crafting store.

  • Washing your rugs can cause fading and result in slippage of the latch hooked strands. Only wash your projects when necessary.
