The bathroom sinks in many older homes do not have pull-up stoppers. You must place a rubber stopper in the sink when you want to fill it. This type of drain is commonly known as a sink basket. Over time the sink drain flange will leak, and you must install a bathroom sink basket. The entire job can be accomplished in an hour by someone with no experience with this type of home repair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bucket
  • Pipe wrench
  • Rubber mallet
  • Plastic putty knife
  • Replacement sink basket
  • Plumber's putty
  • Plumber's tape
  • Utility knife
  1. Step 1

Place a bucket inside the sink cabinet under the pipes. You will need the bucket to catch the water that remains in the sink trap.

  2. Step 2

Use a pipe wrench to loosen the slip nut that attaches the sink trap to the drain pipe coming from the wall. Only loosen the nut; do not disconnect the sink trap at this location. Loosen and disconnect the slip nut from the sink trap to the tail pipe coming from the sink drain. Swing the sink trap out of the way.

  3. Step 3

Use the pipe wrench to remove the slip nut from the tail pipe to the sink drain basket. Remove the tail pipe, and set it aside. Use the pipe wrench to loosen and remove the retaining nut that holds the sink basket in place.

  4. Step 4

Use a mallet or the handle of a hammer to tap the sink basket from under the sink. By doing this, you will break the seal of the plumber's putty under the sink flange. Remove the old sink basket from the sink.

  5. Step 5

Remove any old putty from around the sink drain hole. Use a plastic putty knife if necessary to scrape the putty off without scratching the sink surface.

  6. Step 6

Place a small ball of plumber's putty in the palm of your hand, and roll it with both hands to form a thin rope. Place the rope under the flange of the new sink basket. Set the sink basket into the sink drain hole.

  7. Step 7

Underneath the sink, place the friction washer over the sink basket, and thread the retaining nut onto the sink basket. Tighten the retaining nut using the pipe wrench.

  8. Step 8

Wrap plumber's tape over the threads of the sink basket, and attach the tail pipe to the sink basket using the slip nut.

  9. Step 9

Line the sink trap up with the tail pipe, and thread the slip nut to the pipe to attach the sink trap. Tighten all the slip nuts evenly using the pipe wrench.

  10. Step 10

Use a utility knife to remove the excess plumber's putty from around the sink basket inside the sink. Place the rubber stopper in the basket, and fill the sink half full with water.

  11. Step 11

Pull the stopper out, and check the drain connections under the sink for leaks.
