How to Change Teen Diapers

Some children wear diapers, even as teenagers, due to developmental problems or medical conditions, and these teens may need assistance with changing the diapers. Teens who suffer from enuresis, which is bed wetting, may wear diapers as well but likely don't need help from a caregiver when changing the diapers. Changing a teenager's diaper is much like changing a baby's diaper. Cleanliness is the most important thing to remember while changing a diaper.

Instructions

  1. Change the Diaper

    • 1

Ensure you have all the materials you will need close to you before you begin the diaper changing process.

    • 2

Lay a mat or blanket on the floor. This will protect the area from any leaks or smears that might occur during a diaper change.

    • 3

Ask the teen to lie on the mat; if the teen is not self supportive, lay the teen on the mat yourself. If the teen is in bed and cannot move, lift his legs and buttocks and place a mat underneath.

    • 4

Remove the diaper and place it away from the teen, out of reach, as he may reach for it or kick it unknowingly, which could cause a mess.

    • 5

Clean the area thoroughly with wipes. Be sure to clean the area well to get rid of all urine and feces. For girls, always wipe from front to back. Remaining urine or feces could cause a rash, which is referred to as diaper rash.

    • 6

Apply diaper rash ointment if a rash is pre-existing. Creams will help seal the skin and block it from further moisture while it heals. Desitin is said to relieve the pain of diaper rash immediately and provide an ideal healing environment.

    • 7

Allow the diaper area to dry before you replace the diaper. According to Desitin, this will prevent diaper rash from breaking out. You can blow on the skin to dry it faster, if needed.

    • 8

Slide the new diaper under the teen and fasten. You may re-dress the teen as usual.

    Clean Up

    • 9

Dispose of the diaper properly by fastening the tabs and placing it in a trash can immediately.

    • 10

Wipe the mat down and put away for future use. If it is disposable, throw the mat away.

    • 11

Wash your hands with soap and warm water to get rid of any germs.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your teen has not be diagnosed with a medical condition involving developmental delays, see a doctor to discuss a resolution.
