How to Install a Printer Head for an iP1000 Printer
The Canon Pixma ip1000 is an inkjet-based printer which uses a 16- and 32-pin head and refillable ink cartridges to create photo-quality copies. Printer heads rarely get physically damaged, with the most common problem being ink bleeding that builds up and makes the pins on each head inoperable. The printer head is attached to an aluminum slide with a gear system that moves the heads back and forth across the paper. Replacement parts must typically be ordered through the manufacturer if not covered under warranty. The head kit needed for replacement is often referred to as a roller.
Things You'll Need
- Replacement head kit (comes with both the 16 and 32 pin head and roller)
- Phillips screwdriver (3/16")
- Paper towel
Instructions

1
Press both release switches located at the top front of the printer to open up the access panel. The panel swings downward to open. Inside the access panel you will see the roller, your ink cartridges as well as the running bar.
-
2
Remove the color and black and white ink cartridges. This can be accomplished by pulling them towards you while holding on to the back of the cartridge. Be careful of spilling ink on yourself or your fingers as they will be covered in ink.
-
-
3
Unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the roller. They will be located where you removed the ink cartridges from.
-
4
Unplug the cable from the back of the roller.
-
5
Remove the roller from the running bar. It should just break apart into two pieces without the screws holding it together, although the ink might make that more difficult.
-
6
Wipe down the running bar with paper towel until all excess ink is removed.
-
7
Snap the replacement roller onto the runner. Hold this in place while you tighten the two screws to lock it into place.
-
8
Plug the printer cable into the back of the new roller.
-
9
Replace your ink cartridges to the roller and close the front of the machine.

Tips & Warnings
If you perform this installation while the printer is unplugged or in the off position, it may not recognize where the print head is correctly. If there are problems with your first print after installing the new heads being slightly off there is an easy fix. Open the cover back up and push the roller all the way to the right hand side of the runner bar, then run a test print. This will readjust the alignment of your printer.
Inkjet cartridges are notorious for spilling ink and "bleeding" all over the insides of a printer. This is the most common cause for internal damage to a printer besides paper jams. Make sure to clean the inside thoroughly as well as the inkjet cartridges themselves if you plan on reusing them.
