Step 1
If you are purchasing the scarf and mittens, choose a scarf that is very long. An adult-length scarf rather than a child's length is better, so the child can move his/her hands freely. The scarf has to loosely fit around the neck. The child should be able to wrap the scarf around his/her neck at least once - then with hands relaxed at the child's body, the scarf should extend at least 6- inches below the finger tips.

Step 2
With a needle and heavy cotton thread, by hand, sew the entire opening of the mitten's end to the scarf. It's okay that the scarf will become circular like the mitten after being attached - it will flatten out a few inches upwards.

Step 3
If you are knitting or crocheting the scarf and mittens, don't cast off when you finish the ribbing of mittens; rather continue on, making the scarf and mittens one item instead of three. to do this, just knit the first mitten, then to add width to the scarf, increase a few stitches to the first three rows of the scarf; repeat for second mitten/scarf piece. The seam will be at exact middle of the scarf's length.
