Itchy, puffy eyes can be caused by age, lack of sleep, stress and a number of other conditions. While treating the underlying cause of the problem is of utmost importance, temporary relief of puffy eyes can be had by using ordinary household items.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cucumber slices
  • Black tea bags
  • Hemorrhoid cream
  • Metal teaspoons
  1. Step 1

Place very cold cucumber slices over your eyes and leave them in place for at least 15 minutes to treat itchy, puffy eyes. Cucumbers are comprised of 90 percent water, and the cooling effect is what actually constricts the blood vessels and reduces puffiness. The colder the cucumber, the more effective the treatment.

  2. Step 2

Soak two black tea bags in cold water for several minutes, then place them over your eyes and leave in place for at least 15 minutes. The tannic acid in black tea will effectively reduce itchy, puffy eyes. Soaking the tea bags in ice-cold water will further constrict blood vessels and reduce puffiness.

  3. Step 3

Apply hemorrhoid cream such as Preparation H to itchy, puffy eyes. These products contain hydrocortisone, a topical steroid, that reduces inflammation. This treatment is effective against puffiness and itchiness of the eyes, but should only be used for temporary, short-term use.

  4. Step 4

Place two metal teaspoons in the freezer for several hours or overnight. Place them over your eyes in the morning or whenever the spoons are very cold and leave them in place for 10 to 15 minutes. The coldness of the metal will reduce itchy, puffy eyes.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you suffer with chronic itchy, puffy eyes, reduce your salt intake. Sodium increases water retention, which can encourage bags under the eyes.
  • Try sleeping on an incline so that fluid doesn't pool under the eyes.
  • Long-term use of hemorrhoid cream for treating itchy, puffy eyes can result in acne, wrinkles and broken blood vessels. Use only in moderation and under the supervision of your health care provider.
