How to Feed the Squirrels in Winter

Save

Squirrels are so much fun to watch, and they can use extra food in the winter. You can draw them near to windows and decks so that you can watch them cavort and nibble by providing them with a feeding station.

Things You'll Need

  • Squirrel feeder
  • Corncob
  • Loose seeds
  • Old bread
  • Install a corncob squirrel feeder, a wooden contraption that looks like a birdhouse without the front sides or roof. You can locate the feeder on a tree outside a window or on a deck rail. Place corncobs on the long nail sticking straight up. The squirrels can stand on the feeder and pull away at the corn kernels.

  • Install alternatively a loose-feed squirrel feeder on the side of a tree in view of your windows. Fill it with loose squirrel feed that you can buy or may even be given away. Look for second-grade nuts or feed seed at a feed mill. Or collect walnuts, butternuts, hickory nuts or acorns in the fall and store them for later, recommends Charles Lee of Kansas State University, author of "Tree Squirrels, Urban Wildlife Damage Control."

  • Save your dry, old bread. Break off small pieces and lay them along the deck railing to attract hungry squirrels and watch the show.

Tips & Warnings

  • Feed the wildlife your food scraps every day. If you have woods next to you or a field, go throw the daily food scraps into the woods and help them out. In certain areas, it's a long hard winter for the wildlife.
