Step 1
Try leaving the plastic food container in direct sunlight for a couple hours. Make sure however, that the container is thick, preferably microwave safe one that is less prone to warping through heat.
-
Step 2
Try cutting a slice of lemon and placing it in the container with the lid fastened tightly. Leave the sliced lemon in the container in the fridge for a day or two until the odor is gone.
-
Step 3
For the most persistent odors, soak a piece of bread in a little bit of vinegar and place it in the container replacing the lid. Leave the bread in the container overnight then rewash then rewash your container thoroughly before using it again. If your plastic is stained from tomato sauce or similar, try scrubbing with a liberal amount of baking soda.

on 11/8/2009 Tomato can be stubborn to get out of plastic. Good advice for how to deal with it. We got rid of all of the plastic food containers in our home and switched to glass to avoid exposure to BPA and other plasticizers that may leak into foods.
