Amaretto Bread Pudding with Slivered Almonds

Bread pudding is an old-fashioned comfort food that has been served as a dessert for hundreds of years. Adding amaretto liqueur kicks up the flavor a notch in this tasty recipe.

The directions for creating an optional amaretto glaze are listed also.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 loaf French bread cut into 2" pieces
  • 1 qt. 2% or whole milk
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1 T. vanilla extract
  • 2 T. amaretto liquer
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 1 C. raisins
  • Amaretto Glaze (optional)
  • 1/2 C. slivered almonds (optional)
  • buttered 9x13 baking dish
  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  2. Step 2

In a small bowl, soak raisins in the amaretto liqueur.

  3. Step 3

In a large bowl, combine sugar, vanilla, milk and eggs. Mix well. Add in the french bread, making sure that each piece is coated. Let stand a couple of minutes to soak in the mixture.

  4. Step 4

Add in raisins and mix lightly.

  5. Step 5

Pour into the baking dish and bake 30-45 min. When it has completed baking, you may choose to add an amaretto glaze.

    ************************
    Amaretto Glaze
    1 stick butter
    1 C. powdered sugar
    1/4 C. amaretto
Melt butter in a small saucepan, add sugar and stir constantly. Whisk in amaretto and allow to heat for 1-2 min.

To glaze the bread pudding, while it is still warm, poke holes in the top in 8-10 places and pour the glaze over it. This will allow the glaze to penetrate the pudding as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also had a layer of slivered almonds to the top of the pudding before you bake, to give it a toasty almond crust.
