Instructions

  1. Planning and Prioritizing Goals

    • 1

Using your bank and credit card statements, estimate your average monthly expenses and list them under Month One in your income statement spreadsheet.

    • 2

Plan out 12 months of realistic expenses, including annual and semi-annual payments, so you can see what kinds of financial requirements you will be facing. Setting goals without knowing your financial situation is a recipe for failure.

    • 3

Estimate how much revenue you will need to make a profit. This will give you an idea of whether you must first set a goal of increased revenues, and if not, how much you will have available to spend on other goals you might set.

    • 4

Make a list of goals in order of priority. It is always best if you can produce this list of goals as a result of brainstorming sessions with all appropriate managers in your company. Going after the easier goals first gives you a sense of accomplishment and encouragement.

    • 5

Apply the reality test to your list of goals. Are they achievable? Will they cost more than your expected revenues can accommodate? Are you taking on too much, and should you split your big goals into several steps?

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to put your plan in writing. Organize it under sections: description of goals; time line with benchmarks; methods for achieving the goals; alternative actions to take if your plan isn't working or the goal proves to need adjustment. Use a technique called SMART goal setting. This process evaluates the goals you are considering by having you define how those goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and tangible or timely. Most importantly, your goals should be specific and achievable. Separating a big goal into several easier steps and making those steps into goals will contribute to successful fulfillment of your goal.

  • Once you start working toward a goal you have set you may discover that it is not a realistic goal. Never waste time pursuing a goal that is out of reach. It is always best to go after the easy goals, accomplish them, and then take another look at your next goal.
