How to Diagnose car Problems in a Mustang Rear Axle

The rear axle in a Ford Mustang usually doesn't fail. However, there are two weak points in the axle. The inboard and outboard CV joint on the axle allows the axle to flex. However, the joint also must remain lubricated in order for the joint to function properly. Once the protective boot on the axle rips, the joint will dry out and start to grind. If you are hearing clicking noises coming from the rear of the suspension, you should check the rear axle to make sure that it has not failed.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack
  • 2 jack stands
  1. Step 1

Jack up the rear of the mustang. Lift up on the rear jack point located behind the trunk.

  2. Step 2

Place jack stands underneath the rear pinch welds.

  3. Step 3

Lower the vehicle onto the stands.

  4. Step 4

Climb underneath the rear of the Mustang and inspect the CV joints and the shaft. There should be no scoring on the shaft. The boots at the ends of the shaft should not be ripped or damaged in any way. If they are, the entire shaft will need to be replaced.
