How to Fix the Problem With My POP3 Server From NetZero

NetZero is a North American Internet service provider (ISP). The company is best known for its free and budget-priced dial-up Internet plans. The company uses Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) technology to send and receive email when a customer uses an email management software program like Microsoft Outlook Express. Some users may have difficulty setting up, configuring or connecting to NetZero's POP3 server. Here's how to correct some of the problems that may be preventing you from sending and receiving email.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact NetZero's support line. Verify that your NetZero Internet service account is in good standing and that the company's server network is not currently experiencing technical difficulties. If you are a dial-up customer, dial (866) 841-1442. If you use NetZero's DSL service, call (866) 810-8092. Be prepared to provide your NetZero account number, found on your most recent NetZero bill. Representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Open your email management program's account settings. For example, individuals using Outlook Express on a Windows PC should select "Tools" in the top menu bar and click "Accounts." Double-click on an account name to view its details. Customers using Apple Mail on a Mac should click "Mail" in the top menu bar, select "Preferences," and click "Account." If you are unsure how to open your account preferences, consult the manual for your respective software.

    • 3

Verify your NetZero POP3 server details in the offline email management program. Incorrect details will cause connection errors when trying to connect to NetZero's POP3 server. Your email address should be "memberid@netzero.com," with "memberid" being the account name you created when registering for NetZero's email service. Your outgoing POP3 server should be "pop.netzero.com."

    • 4

Re-enter your NetZero password in your email program. A typo or similar mistake will prevent the software from successfully logging into the POP3 server stopping all email downloads. If you forgot your email password, contact NetZero's support line (see Step 1) and have your account reset.

    • 5

Turn off your computer's firewall if you are running such a security program. A firewall may be blocking data from being sent to NetZero's POP3 server, cutting off all email. On a Mac, click the apple-shaped icon in the top left-hand side of the screen. Select "Preferences" and press "Security," then "Firewall." On a Windows PC, right-click the firewall program you use in the Windows system tray. Click "Pause" or "Quit."

Tips & Warnings

  • You must upgrade to a paid NetZero service plan if you are a free NetZero customer and are trying to use an offline email program such as Apple Mail or Outlook Express. All free NetZero accounts cannot use the company's POP3 email server.
