How to Reset a Fuel Filter Alert on a GMC Duramax

by Thomas West

Some Chevrolet and GMC trucks equipped with the Duramax diesel engine come standard with an alert display in the dashboard. This alert system will let you know when to change your engine oil, when you have water in your fuel, as well as letting you know that your fuel filter will need changed soon. However, the act of replacing the fuel filter will not erase the alert from the screen. This must be done manually from inside the cab of the truck.

Step 1

Press and hold the return arrow or select button (depending on model) on the right side of the steering wheel for five seconds while the fuel filter message is displayed.

Step 2

Follow the subsequent steps if your truck does not have steering wheel control buttons.

Step 3

Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position, but do not start the engine. Do not depress the accelerator or brake pedals.

Step 4

Wait for five seconds.

Step 5

Depress the accelerator and brake pedals simultaneously and fully and hold them down for ten seconds.

Step 6

Release the accelerator and brake pedals and turn the ignition key off. The system is now reset.
