How to Swim in Texas Lakes
Texas is hot and humid many months of the year, and one way Texans and visitors beat the heat is by swimming in many of the state's man-made or natural lakes. Though most are cleared for swimming, many are not because of water sports or wild animals ruling the waters. After taking the time to check the rules near the lake of your choice, swimming in Texas lakes is fun and easy.

1
Make a list of possible lakes in the area of Texas you'd like to swim. For example: Lake Conroe, Lake Houston and Clear Lake are all big lakes surrounding Houston, and Lake Travis is the most popular lake in Austin.
-
2
Get on the computer, access the Internet and go to a search engine. Enter the name of the big city the lakes are closest to and add "parks and recreation" following it. For example: Austin Parks and Recreation.
-
-
3
Check the first listings under the search results for an official website of the city's parks and recreation department. Click the website link and search for contact information for the department.
-
4
Contact the city's parks and recreation department to inquire specifics on swimming laws in each of the lakes on your list to find out which ones allow swimming and are safe.
-
5
Ask a park's and recreation department member directions to the lake of your choice.
-
6
Drive to the lake. Check for "no swimming" signs around an area of the lake before jumping in for a nice dip.

Tips & Warnings
Many lakes in Texas do not allow swimming because of wildlife or water sports activities. If it's the weekend and the parks and recreation department is closed, call multiple local businesses near the lake to see if anyone there knows of a swimming-designated area.
Do not swim in a lake that is not specified for it. Many lakes in Texas are man made, which means there are tree trunks below the water's surface that make swimming dangerous. There are also wild animals like alligators in some lakes. Be sure that you are in a swimming area and not one for water sports, because motorboats and jet skis are dangerous to swimmers.
