How to Make Moving Buddy Icons Online

If you use AIM or another instant messaging service, you probably want to get creative with the buddy icon you display. Buddy icons are thumbnail images that appear on-screen when you are communicating with others through IM. One option you have is to make a moving, or animated, buddy icon. You can use several online programs to create a moving buddy icon.

      Use a website that has a moving Buddy icon maker application available. You'll find several examples in the Resources below. Many of these programs are free, but ad-supported.

      Choose the images or text you want to include in your moving Buddy icon. Most programs will require that you use one to five images to make your moving buddy icon. Browse your computer for the picture files that you want to include. For text, you can simply type the words for the icon.

      Adjust the sizes of the images you want to include in your moving icon. AIM restricts image sizes to 48-by-48 pixels. To resize your images using Windows, open the folder that contains the image or images you want to include in your moving icon. If necessary, open each image in your image-editing application of choice to resize. Save the image with a different filename to leave the original intact.

      Back in the online application, select the speed you want for your moving Buddy icon. The images can appear on your icon at a slow, medium, or fast pace.

      Set any options you want for your icon. Most applications let you choose to trim the white space around the images as well as select a border color to frame the moving icon.

      Upload your Buddy icon. You can preview the image before using it as your Buddy icon. There will be a link on the webpage to download the moving icon to AIM.

  • Make sure you don't use any copyrighted images without permission when making your moving Buddy icon.
