How to Use Crushed Stone for Patio Base
The creation of a patio is similar to most other construction projects in one very important way. A properly designed and built base is crucial in order to have a long-lasting patio. By taking the time to construct a proper foundation now, you will avoid a lot of work, extra expense and frustration later. A material that is very effective as part of a good patio base is crushed stone, or gravel. Mark the perimeter of the patio on the ground with landscaping paint.

Excavate the area within the boundaries to a depth of at least 4 inches and up to 6 inches. Determine this exact depth by researching what is best for the type of patio you are building. It will be dependent also on the climate in which you live. An area with hard freezes may require a deeper base.

Remove any debris, large rocks and weeds from the area. Smooth and level the soil with a rake.

Shovel the crushed stone into the excavated area, continuing until you reach the planned depth.

Rake the crushed stone until it is level. It is now ready for the next phase in the building of your patio. Concrete can be poured over the crushed stone, or a layer of masonry sand can be added to the top on which you can lay pavers.
