How to Fertilize Encore Azaleas
Encore azaleas are a newly hybridized type of azalea that blooms several times during the growing season. The common azalea only blooms in early spring. The encore azalea performs well in full to part sun in an acidic soil with a pH level of 5.5 to 6.5. Occasionally, fertilization to correct nutrient deficiencies in the soil may be needed. In order to find out what amendments are needed, a soil test must be submitted to your county agricultural extension office. Encore azaleas are easily damaged by adding too much or the wrong kind of fertilizer. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Read the soil test to find out what amendments are needed in soil surrounding encore azalea plant.

2
Fertilize with a granulated slow-release fertilizer by sprinkling lightly around the edge of the root zone. Azalea roots are close to the surface and very fine. Azaleas are easily damaged by fertilizer salts. A few light applications are much better than one heavy application. Apply fertilizer to mulched areas by pulling back the mulch cover, and then adding fertilizer.

Mulch root zone around azaleas after fertilizer is added. Azaleas should be kept evenly moist but not wet. A 2-inch thick layer of mulch is sufficient.

Tips & Warnings
If needed, trim encore azaleas to shape soon after the first bloom in spring.
Strong nitrogen and phosphorous containing fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate will kill azaleas if applied directly to the root zone. Azaleas easily grow if the soil pH conditions are correct. Don't try to grow azaleas in soil with a Ph above 7.0 as they won't survive without the addition of expensive soil amendments.
