The flip and beehive hairstyles were popular in the 1960s, and there are still women that wear versions of these styles today. The flip hairstyle used to be done the night before while the hair is wet and by sleeping in rollers. The styling tools currently available today allow these hairdos to be done immediately before work, a retro costume party or a night on the town. The beehive and flip can be achieved by using styling tools such as a hair dryer and straightener that you may already have at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair dryer
  • Vent brush
  • Hair straightener
  • Rat-tail comb
  • Hairspray

    The Flip

  1. Step 1

Dry the hair, smoothing the crown straight and the bangs to the side.

  2. Step 2

Gather a 2-inch section of the ends of the hair near the face.

  3. Step 3

Run the vent brush down to the bottom of the 2-inch section and apply heat with the hairdryer while turning the vent brush upward. Hold the section in place with the vent brush until the hair stays in a flipped-up fashion. Spray with hairspray.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this process until all the ends of the hair are flipped up.

  5. Step 5

Use a hair straightener to touch up any ends that start to droop. Apply heat with the straightener only to the tips of the hair; moving the straightener quickly and in an upward motion.

  6. Beehive

  7. Step 1

Start with the hair dry and unwashed if possible. Lift a 3-inch section from the crown and hold straight up in the air.

  8. Step 2

Hold the hair vertically while backcombing the section of hair with a rat-tailed comb. Starting at the ends of the hair, move the comb down towards the scalp in a quick motion. Continue backcombing the sections until the hair is teased from ear to ear across the crown.

  9. Step 3

Spray the backcombing with a strong-hold hairspray. While the hairspray is still wet, use your hands to smooth the backcombing toward the back of the head.

  10. Step 4

Wrap the hair that is not teased into a twist in the center of the back of the head, pushing up while securing with bobby pins to add volume to the teased front portion.

  11. Step 5

Add a thick headband in front of the teased portion to hide the base of the backcombing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use electric rollers for a tight flip-style. Condition the hair after the style is washed out to help repair the hair from styling damage.
  • Turn off and unplug all electric hair styling products immediately after use to avoid a fire hazard.
