The Apple iPod is one of the most popular portable media devices. Most iPods can play digital audio files, as well as videos, audiobooks and video games. Because so many people own iPods, some people change how their iPod looks or functions to make it uniquely their own. Luckily, there are many ways to customize an iPod.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPod
  • iTunes version 9.0 or later software
  • USB cable for iPod
  • iPod accessories (optional)

    Customizing an iPod's Content

  1. Step 1

Connect the iPod to a computer using its USB cable to load custom content onto it. While iPods were originally designed to play audio files, most models now also play video files as well as video games.

  2. Step 2

Launch the iTunes software. Often, it launches automatically when you connect an iPod to the computer.

  3. Step 3

Click "iTunes Store" in the left-hand side of the iTunes software to load the online store in the main iTunes window.

  4. Step 4

Purchase and download content for the iPod. Click "Music" in the top iTunes Store menu bar to buy and download individual songs or whole albums, or click "Audiobooks" to buy and download your favorite fiction and nonfiction books. Click "Movies" or "TV Shows" to buy and download videos. Click "App Store" to download applications and games, but be aware that your iPod model may not be compatible with some products in this area of the iTunes Store. Subscribe to podcasts or download individual episodes by clicking "Podcasts."

  5. Step 5

Add the content you bought and downloaded from the iTunes Store. Click your iPod's name in the left-hand window of iTunes, then press "Sync" in the main window to transfer the content to your device.

  6. Customizing an iPod's Appearance and Performance

  7. Step 1

Buy a case or skin to customize your iPod's color and design scheme. Cases and skins for iPods come in a variety of colors and patterns. They're available in Apple stores and on its website (store.apple.com), as well as from retailers such as Target and Best Buy and online retailers such as Amazon. An iPod case and skin not only changes the look of your device, it also offers some level of protection for the iPod.

  8. Step 2

Customize your iPod listening experience at home or in your office by purchasing various accessories and add-on devices. For example, an iPod dock with a remote control lets you access and control the content on the device without using the iPod's built-in controls. You can also connect the dock to a speaker system to boost its amplification.

  9. Step 3

Customize your iPod listening experience when you're on the go by purchasing Apple's headphones with a built-in remote. These headphones allow you to skip, repeat, pause or adjust the volume of what's playing on an iPod without taking the device out of your pocket.

  10. Customizing an iPod's Settings

  11. Step 1

Press the "Menu" button at the top of the iPod's scroll wheel.

  12. Step 2

Use your finger to scroll down to "Settings," then click the center button on the iPod to access a menu of all the device's customizable settings.

  13. Step 3

Change the settings to meet your preferences. For example, turn on "Shuffle" to change how the iPod plays individual audio tracks, or press "Volume Limit" to set custom volume controls.

Tips & Warnings
  • An iPod case not only lets you customize your iPod's appearance, but it can also protect the device from scratches, dents and damage from accidental drops. A rigid plastic case typically offers more protection.
