Hairdressers recommend a deep conditioning treatment every few weeks to help keep your hair soft and shiny. Commercially available deep conditioners are quite expensive but homemade alternatives using coconut oil are just as effective and a fraction of the cost.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solid coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Small microwaveable dish
  • Microwave
  • Bath towel
  • Comb
  1. Step 1

In a small microwaveable dish, measure out about 4 to 6 tablespoons of solid coconut oil. Use more for longer hair, less for shorter hair.

  2. Step 2

Put this in the microwave and heat it at full power for ten seconds. If the coconut oil is still solid or partially solid, microwave for an additional 5 to 10 seconds and repeat until it is completely liquid.

  3. Step 3

Add about 1 to 2 teaspoons of olive oil to the liquid coconut oil and blend it together with the spoon.

  4. Step 4

Immediately apply the liquid to dry hair. One of the easiest ways to do this is to spoon a little of the conditioner onto your hand, rub both hands together then run your fingers and palms through your hair. Concentrate it on the ends of your hair.

  5. Step 5

Apply conditioner until your hair is almost saturated, then comb it all through. If your hair is long, twist it into a ponytail and put it on top of your head. Wrap your hair in a bath towel, leave it in place and relax for at least 30 minutes while the conditioner soaks into your hair.

  6. Step 6

Wash your hair with your usual shampoo to remove all the conditioner. Your hair should be left shinier and softer. Use the conditioner once a week or every two weeks to keep your hair in good condition.

Tips & Warnings
  • Any extra deep conditioner will keep in a screw-top jar in the refrigerator indefinitely. Just melt it in the microwave before you use it.
