How to Use Pistol Grips on Shotguns
Pistol grips are not the standard grip for a shotgun, but are used in several variations on modified or less common configurations of the standard shotgun platform. These include pistol grips added to a standard shotgun, pistol grips added with the stock removed, sawed-off shotguns, fully automatic shotguns and even specially designed shotguns with a pistol grip for each hand. The essence of the pistol grip technique, however, remains the same.

1
Hold the shotgun with your left hand out on the stock (or on the pump of a pump-action shotgun) and then grip the pistol grip with your right hand directly from behind, wrapping your fingers around the right side of the grip with your thumb on the left.
-
2
Push the web of your hand upwards and forwards against the very top of the grip for the greatest stability, so that your right forefinger rests above the trigger guard.
-
-
3
Keep your right wrist locked with your forearm extending directly backwards, in line with the barrel of the gun. Without this firm angle, your wrist can bend or twist when the gun is fired.
-
4
Brace the gun against your body for support against the heavy recoil. A shotgun blast is much greater than a pistol's recoil, and your wrist will require extra support against the force. If the shotgun has a stock, tuck it firmly against your right shoulder. If there is no stock, brace your right forearm against the top of your right hip. Adjust your stance as necessary to absorb the shock.
-
5
Squeeze the rounds slowly with a deliberate contraction of your right index finger. The shot should come as a surprise to you; do not jerk when pulling the trigger and pull the trigger straight back. Control your weight shift to your back foot with the recoil, and make sure you are completely stable before beginning to squeeze off another round.
