A microwavable corn pillow can provide soothing warmth to aching muscles in cold weather. The corn pillow is made up of two parts, the basic pillow and a small pillow case or sham that covers it. Sewing on Velcro can be a bit challenging, but with a few basic tips, your corn pillows will be at the ready to keep your toes toasty this winter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut the 18 inch by 22 inch panel of fabric into two 18 inch by 11 inch rectangles. Zigzag stitch along one short end of each rectangle or make a narrow 1/4 inch hem.

  2. Step 2

Cut the Velcro approximately 1 inch shorter than your fabric panels. Sew the Velcro into place on the outside of the fabric 1/4 inch from the finished edge using a wide zig zag stitch. Stitch around all four sides of each strip of Velcro.

  3. Step 3

Stitch around the remaining three sides of your two pieces of fabric with the right sides of the fabric together. Finish seams with a zig zag stitch, then turn right side out.

  4. Step 4

Take your sewn pillowcase to the ironing board. You will now turn a hem under along the top edge. The velcro will become part of your hem allowance. Fold the velcro edge of the fabric to the wrong side, allowing for approximately a 1 1/2 inch hem. You should have 1/4 inch of fabric above and below the Velcro. Stitch your hem into place.

  5. Step 5

Insert the corn pillow into your Velcro pillow case or sham. Make several corn pillow cases to make laundering easier. You are now ready to use and enjoy your corn pillow.

Tips & Warnings
  • Replace the corn in your corn pillow with rice or flax. Add lavender or other herbs to your microwaveable pillow. Make smaller bags to use as handwarmers or adjust the size according to your needs. Try fusible Velcro to cut down on the sewing required (see Resources).
