How to Remove a Rusted Chrome Bumper

Maybe you want to restore it, maybe you want to replace it with an entirely different bumper. Whatever the case, removing an old, rusty chrome bumper can be challenging due to the fact that the bolts are probably rusted or seized. Special tools are usually required for the job, called bolt-out kits. A bolt-out kit grinds into the bolt and allows you to remove it. These kits are available from most auto parts stores. While they will destroy the mounting bolts, you probably need new ones anyway.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb under the vehicle and place the bolt-out socket over the rusty bolts. You may have to experiment with the socket sizes since the rusty bolts are probably not their original size.

    • 2

Fit the ratchet end of the socket wrench into the back of the bolt-out socket.

    • 3

Turn the bolt-out socket and bolt counterclockwise. The bolt-out socket has special teeth that "bite" into the bolt and destroy it as it is pulled out of the bumper support.

    • 4

Pull the bumper off the bumper support after all of the bolts have been removed.
