How to Cancel an Extended Warranty

Buying an extended warranty with an expensive item can be a worthwhile investment. Many companies that offer extended warranties do so to protect the user against accidental damage or normal wear and tear. But if you purchase an extended warranty and then change your mind, follow these steps.

1. Consult the "Terms and Conditions" manual provided with the extended warranty. Most warranties are refundable up to a certain date after purchase--usually between 14 and 30 days. If the refund deadline has passed, you are more than likely out of luck, as upon purchase you technically agreed to everything laid out in the terms and conditions.

2. Call the customer service line for the warranty company. Employees at the store where you purchased the item and its warranty are not authorized to cancel a warranty. If you can't find the warranty company phone number, employees at the retailer should be able to provide it.

3. Ask to speak to a supervisor. In most cases, not only will a regular customer service representative attempt to talk you out of canceling your extended warranty (don't be annoyed--it's their job), they don't have the authorization to do so. If you have made up your mind to cancel your extended warranty, immediately ask for a supervisor.

4. Be polite and courteous. Explain very clearly the reasons why you are canceling your extended warranty, and confirm that nothing is going to change your mind. Being calm and collected on the phone will expedite the process.
