How to Install a Humidifer
Homes that are dry due to low humidity may require the use of a humidifier. You can purchase a stand alone unit or install a central humidifier. Standalone humidifiers do not require any installation to use the unit, but a central humidifier must be installed to your home's heating system. The benefit of a central humidifier is you don't need to plug it in or manually add water. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Metal shears
- Safety goggles
- Work gloves
- Screwdriver
- Level
- Flexible duct
Instructions
-
-
1
Draw a template for the humidifier on the main return above your furnace. Place a paper template on the main return plenum, and use a level to make sure it is level.
-
2
Mark on the main supply plenum where the humidifier duct will go.
-
-
3
Use metal shears to cut the metal to create an opening for the humidifier. Follow the template to make sure the opening is the right size.
-
4
Install the humidifier by placing the unit in the opening you made in the main return plenum. Use a level to make sure the unit is level. Follow the instructions that came with the unit to attach it to the metal.
-
5
Cut a hole for the humidifier supply duct using metal shears. Insert the mounting collar if there was one included with the mounting kit.
-
6
Attach a piece of flexible duct from the humidifier to supply plenum. Use a screwdriver to secure the flexible duct to the humidifier and the mounting collar.
-
7
Install a solenoid valve to control water flow. A small pipe connects to the valve that runs to the distribution tray in the humidifier.
-
8
Provide a source of water for the humidifier. Connect flexible copper pipe or hard plastic tubing, depending on what was included with the humidifier.
-
9
Install a saddle valve on the pipe that will supply water to the humidifier. The saddle valve is used to supply the water that is used by the humidifier. (See Resources.)
-
10
Install the humidistat on the plenum or near the existing thermostat by following the instructions that came with the humidifier. The humidistat allows you to regulate the amount of humidity in your home.

Tips & Warnings
The plenum looks like a metal box that connects the furnace to the rest of the duct work. A catch basin or overflow drainpipe is used to recirculate water back to the humidifier.
Turn off the furnace and electricity before installing a central humidifier. If the humidifier is not level, the water will not be evenly distributed. Wear goggles and work gloves to protect yourself from sharp metal.
