The pool pump, which pumps water through the filter and back into the pool, is an essential part of maintaining a clear and balanced swimming pool. The motor of the pump drives the water through the pump and filter. When a pump motor starts to fail, it may make noises or the water return may not be moving as fast as it previously had. It's important to replace the motor or pump when this happens to ensure your pool continues to have clean and balanced water. You can save money by replacing the motor instead of the whole unit.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Disconnect the power cord either from the outlet it is connected to or the pump.

  2. Step 2

Close the valves on the intake and discharge sides of the motor and pump unit. This is an important step so the pool does not drain excess water.

  3. Step 3

Use a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp on the pool hose that connects to the skimmer. Loosen the hose clamp on the pool hose that connects to the filter.

  4. Step 4

Use a wrench to loosen the bolts on the pump and disconnect the pump from the motor. Most pump motors use a 9/16- or 5/8-inch wrench.

  5. Step 5

Connect the new motor to the pump. Using the same wrench, reconnect the bolts to the pump and motor. Be sure to tighten the bolts as tight as possible to avoid any leaks.

  6. Step 6

Reconnect the pump to the pool hoses and tighten the hose clamps. Open the intake and discharge valves.

  7. Step 7

Plug the motor back into an electrical outlet. Your pump and motor are now ready to be primed.
